Mary
Samuels is a successful Long Island artist,
both in fine art and decorative art. Working
primarily in watercolor and acrylic, Mary's
style is impressionistic. Her work is mostly
inspired by nature: gardens in sunlight,
trees, flowers, ponds find their way into
her repertoire of work.
As she recently said, "Nature feeds my soul.
I come alive in spring. The colors just
beckon to be painted. I don't try to paint
anything too tight or exact. I like a more
impressionistic approach. I paint
emotion—feelings—as opposed to trying to
duplicate something such as a flower that is
already perfect in reality." As of late,
Mary has been painting a series of abstract
"colorscapes." Still inspired by nature, she
is deliberately painting
non-representational fields of color just
for the joy of painting—they're all pure
emotion."

Mary always knew she wanted to paint but—as
with many women artists— she focused on her
family. Her career as an artist started in
earnest at 45, when having raised her
children, Mary was able to devote herself
completely to her passion—her art. While
largely self-taught, Mary has studied with
various well-known artists and has taken
many art courses.
Despite her late start and
lack of formal art education, Mary has had a
very successful profession. She was one of
16 artists who founded the first gallery in
Bellport in 1994, where at one of its shows,
Helen A. Harrison of The New York Times
considered Mary's watercolors to be one of
the highlights: "In a more meditative mood
Mary Samuels depicts the Galway coast as a
study in greens and blues, suffused with
mist and melancholy."
Mary has had a number
of one-woman shows, participated in many
prestigious shows and exhibits, and has been
the subject of many articles and interviews,
most notably The New York Times, Newsday and
Channel 21. Mary's interior designs were
selected for the showcases of Mansions and
Millionaires for four years; her design
inspiration at the Oheka Designer^'
Showcase® was featured in Distinction®
Magazine.
Recently, Mary sold her gallery in Eastport
to move back into her studio in Brookhaven,
where she shows and offers work for sale,
and is focused solely on teaching and
painting. Mary has done many murals and
paintings for clients from New York City to
Montauk, her work is in many private and
corporate collections throughout the US,
Australia and Ireland.
