Summer concerts have become part of the Bellport Village tradition. Many
Bellport residents remember the late Walt Ebersole, music director for
Bellport High School, who volunteered his services as leader of the
summer band for so many years. Walt would build an orchestra of adults
and students from the community, rehearse for four weeks in June, and
have four Friday night performances in July.
As Walt's health declined in the late '70's no substitute could be found
for our generous leader. Subsequently, Village resident, Ron Hammond,
volunteered to arrange for professional performers to supplement the
community band. Eventually, with support from the mayor and the Village,
Ron was able to expand the program to cover the entire summer with
approximately 12 programs per year.
The
repertoire evolved to all types of music from Jazz, R&B, Classical,
Western, Calypso, Doo Wop, to modern day Rock. One thing that continues
from the old days is Mr. Hammond's efforts, where possible, to hire
bands with roots in the community. Each year our shorefront bandshell
treats residents and guests to an enjoyable season of professional
entertainment from late June to early September.
The Bandshell is located at the Village Marina.
