Village of Bellport Recycling and Compost Questionnaire

Bellport Highway and Sanitation DeptThe Village of Bellport has had a Recycling Program and a Composting Program for many years. The Village is considering adopting a Recycling and Composting Code as well as a “Pay as you Throw” Program. They would like input from Village residents. They hope that you would help by answering the following questions. Be sure to click "Submit" below or your answers will not be received!

The Bellport Recycling Program covers certain products including paper products and metal, glass and plastic containers.

Food waste is very heavy. It makes up a significant portion of the waste the Village hauls away to the landfill. Some municipalities reduce their landfill fees by having their residents compost their food waste. Ten years ago the Bellport Recycling Program started a Food Waste Composting Program and supplied backyard food waste compost containers to Village residents. About 300 residents enrolled in the program.

5. Do you compost your food waste now?

Yes
No

If you do not compost your food waste now, please answer the following questions:

6. Would you sign up for the Food Waste Composting Program through which the village would supply you with a backyard food waste compost container at a wholesale price, about $75?

Yes
No
N/A

7
. Would you attend an optional short training session about food waste composting given in the Village for free?

Yes
No
N/A

Currently, each Village resident pays a landfill fee with their village taxes.  As more families recycle and compost, the Village landfill costs will decrease.   Each resident’s landfill fee will diminish as all residents decrease the amount of garbage they put out for collection.

8. Do you think it is fair for the Village to fine those residents who do not recycle enough?

Yes
No

9
. Do you think it is fair for the Village to reduce the landfill fee for residents who participate in the Food Waste Composting Program?

Yes
No

10
. Do you think it is fair to mandate that all residents participate in the Food Waste Composting Program?

Yes
No

A new program is being considered by the Village to decrease the tons of waste that go to the landfill and to decrease the costs to each resident. The new program is called “Pay as You Throw." Several East End Long Island villages and towns have such a program. The idea is to provide a daily financial incentive for residents to decrease their curb-side garbage.

In this program, residents pay for trash collection by purchasing Village-approved bags. Only these Village-approved bags would be collected by the Village’s sanitation trucks.

By purchasing the Village-approved bags for a set fee, each household would pay in proportion to the amount that is collected from their house. Each family can control their costs by careful purchasing, recycling and composting.

11. Would you support such a program?

Yes
No
